Party Princess – Chaotic Council Crisis

Or should I call it CCC? Anyway, I may have said this before but this is the very first book I read from this series. Back when I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and could only pick up pieces of what was happening. I assumed the book series was going to take a similar approach to the film in terms of writing and boy was I wrong.

In this volume, Mia has chosen to stay as president of the student council with Lilly as vice president. Ling Su and Tina are also in the student council as well. When they discover that they are bankrupt, everyone tries to pitch in ideas to raise money. Mia keeps declining certain ideas and on the sidelines she has written a short story about a guy who goes to her school and all she knows about him is that he gets chili at the cafeteria everyday but is constantly seen picking the corn out of the chili because he hates corn.

Lilly decides to start a magazine but Mia immediately tries to stop it because of the silly name it has, as it sounds like an insult to her cat.

Let me just say this. This book, and all of the books in this series so far, always have moments where sometimes the characters make lists (mostly Mia but sometimes she and Lilly do it together) especially when I get to a chapter with passing notes (in the default font for Mia, italics for Lilly and bold for Tina). Some of the lists were crazy in this book, the one that actually pissed me off was one Lilly made about all these women who are too beautiful in her mind and should be sent away to a deserted island so that the rest of the female population can stop being so insecure and inadequate about themselves.

Some of the women she mentioned I strongly disagreed with like Angelina Jolie. She’s great in action films, especially and she’s an inspiration to me. Then Keira Knightley who I absolutely loved as Elizabeth Swann, where she goes from being a damsel in distress to a badass Pirate Lord/King. Then Natalie Portman whom I enjoy a few of her roles, not just Padme but also Evey in V for Vendetta and Nina Sayers in Black Swan. I mean, Lilly’s entitled to her opinions but still, she’s got some stronger feminist ones than my own.

In order to regain the lost money, Mia’s grandmother steps in to have Mia and her friends put on a musical about Mia’s ancestor whom Mia lands the lead role in much to her dismay, as she hoped Lilly would be a better fit. I couldn’t help but notice that Mia’s ex, Kenny was there to and she still gets him to do her science homework so I guess now they’re just friends.

Then, Mia is once again worried about being in hot water with her boyfriend Michael because he wants to have a house party and Mia has never been a party girl, especially since her last party ended in disaster. She thinks she won’t be a good fit to party with college kids. I don’t blame her. I’m not a party person either. I’ve been to some family parties but I always find some way to retreat to talk one on one with someone or I discover the family’s cat and spend time with them instead. Other than that, I prefer to stay at home with a Long Island and a movie or game in my PJs!

Mia goes the extra mile to show Michael she can party and takes it a little too far. On top of that, she soon learns that the person also in the musical with her, who also comes to the party is John Paul Reynolds Abernathy IV a.k.a J.P. who is revealed to be the guy who doesn’t like corn in his chili. Mia learns there is more to him than meets the eye and he turns out to be a rather nice guy who then begins to eat lunch with Mia and her friends. Never judge a book by its cover I always say.

Well, once again, Mia had nothing to fret over and all her friends got to go to the benefit after the success of the musical and meet their idols. There’s no telling where this goes from here as if I remember, the eighth book has a significant time gap in it, so I might go straight to it and read the other two individual books I have later. One of them is about Mia’s Sweet Sixteen and another is about Valentine’s Day so regular part of the series first for me.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
