The Future Is Nigh, Roll Out

I was planning this for about a year. I thought to myself, if I want to keep doing something I love then I will have to be prepared for the changes to come.

Technology is always changing and as a PC gamer I always have to keep in mind what is required to run newer games before I attempt to play them.

Based on recent releases of new games that caught my eye: some I even played demos of, and circulating rumors surrounding the continuity of ports from PS to PC. I decided it was time for an upgrade.

Before going about this, I asked other PC gamers how often they do this. Some say they don’t unless something breaks. But I didn’t want to take this approach because it would likely cost more.

Everything had been working fine with Teletraan-1 when she was first built in 2019. The only issue I had was 6 months later one of the fans started rattling and that was annoying so I replaced it.

With everything set I picked a day off and took my battlestation to the shop. A new Canada Computers had recently opened in my town so I didn’t have to drive too far.

I told them my intentions and was hoping to upgrade just my graphics card and processor.

My old GPU was 1070 ti so I made the jump to 4070, definitely a big leap. I didn’t care what the card looked like, as long as it could do the job and lucky for me, the prices on graphics cards were coming down recently. They had been hard to obtain in the midst of covid but now it seemed to have settled down.

When it came to selecting a new CPU however, I picked AMD this time and this one is more powerful than my old processor but I was then informed that if I wanted to replace that, my motherboard and RAM would have to be changed as well since the new processor would not fit in the socket of the current motherboard, so I relented and went with an Aurorus and the RAM is simply called Fury Beast, it lights up too which is a sweet bonus.

I had to get a new cooler too, but I loved my old one so when I saw that Cooler Master still made the one I liked, it worked out just fine. Spent under two grand for the upgrades and an additional for a new SSD with more storage which was a last minute decision but worth it. So the only things that remained the same in Teletraan-1 are my monitor, PSU and the tower so it’s not completely starting from scratch.

I didn’t want to do that anyway because I love my Phanteks Enthoo Pro M tower that holds everything together with the tempered glass window, so now I’m all set to play newer games and it should give me five or six more years. Worth every dime I tell you.

One of the things that helped me and the guy at the store decide on the new specs was I brought him a list of all the games I wanted to play in the future, including PS games rumoured to be coming to PC. Honestly, I think the guy was able to help me decide most easily when he saw Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC Phantom of Liberty!

Once I had my computer back, I plugged her in and she booted up nicely. Teletraan-1 is ready to rock and roll once again!

I’m happy with my new upgrades. I can’t wait to try some newer games on Teletraan-1 now. In fact, I just started the Dead Space remaster which was previously not completely compatible with my PC before upgrading. Well, here’s to more years of gaming with Teletraan-1.

  1. I feel like I’m missing something immediately prior to your last paragraph — but otherwise, congrats on the upgrade! Always such a nice feeling to be able to do it — especially when it works smoothly from the get go! 🙂

    1. That’s because I meant to add something else and then changed my mind.

Thanks, it does feel good when everything works once the specs are in and I’m all set.
