Steam Scream Fest 2022 – What I Bought

We’re just wrapping up the Steam Scream Fest of 2022 and I didn’t want to buy anything at first. Hell, I almost wanted to buy every remaining horror game on my wishlist but I wanted to stick to a budget.

But some deals were pretty difficult to ignore so here’s my haul.

The Whisperer

I was drawn to this game for its environment as it is set in the Southern part of Canada. A horror game in a Canadian setting is an instant win for me, it was also on sale for a deal that was probably the best I scored.

It may look simple in terms of gameplay, involving examining things and finding certain items for puzzles, much like Resident Evil. The story is simple, you must investigate the disappearance of two residents in the cottage during the winter. I’m sure this one will have some suspense in it even if it’s not very long.

Visage

A psychological survival horror game, this one has been on my wishlist for a long time and boy even from the trailers I can tell that it’s going to be terrifying! There isn’t much revealed on the story but it sounds like it’s about exploring a large house and learning about the previous dwellers, some of them were murdered. I’m confident the story will unveil itself as I play.

From the looks of it, this might just be one of the scariest games I play to date, but I’ll have to wait until I actually play it to know for sure. I’m pretty brave so bring it on!

The Alien Cube

Ah cosmic horror, what do you do to me? This is what I get for spending hours reading my Necronomicon! I’m instantly drawn to any games with Lovecraftian horror, however, many of them have to have the right gameplay too.

Call of Cthulhu got most of it right so I have a feeling this game will too, it looks very colourful in an eerie way. Another story about uncovering the truth of what has been lost in a mysterious place, that seems to be the theme of these horror games! But, like I said, anything Lovecraft-inspired is worth checking out.

Chernobylite

This game has been on my wishlist forever, way back when it was still in Early Access, now I am finally adding it to my collection! I was drawn to it right away for the psychological theme and how it takes place within the Chernobyl exclusion zone. I can see my friend’s jealousy now since he and I love to talk about the Chernobyl disaster and the HBO miniseries (which is great by the way if you haven’t checked it out yet)

The story is about an ex-employee of the Chernobyl power plant who returns to the exclusion zone to investigate the disappearance of his fiancee but it sounds like there’s more to it that will unfold as I play.

Not only did I see the horror aspect but the gameplay also revolves around survival as you craft resources and keep a base of operations, and supernatural forces that roam Pripyat. This won’t be easy but it’ll definitely bring a very visual experience.

Some players have mentioned gameplay is repetitive or not organized but I’ll be the judge of that. It’s about time this game was added to my library.

And that’s my spooky haul for the season, I love horror so finding a good horror game to play, or film to watch, can sometimes be scarce, but when you find something that truly speaks to you, then it’s worth it. Let’s hope that when I get to these particular games, they don’t disappoint.
