Steam Deck Rambles – Arrival and Playtime

I waited a whole year for this and it finally came! When Valve first announced the Steam Deck last year, I was pretty open-minded about it.

I placed my reservation for the most expensive model because having more than enough storage space is essential. One year and seven weeks later I did not get my email to confirm my purchase until the 11th of this month, which was coincidentally the same day I was able to return to work after being sick with covid.

Then my Steam Deck officially arrived a week after I completed the full purchase. I tried to get FedEx to reschedule the delivery to the following Tuesday when I’d actually be home since the original delivery date was on a Friday when I would be at work all day, but they didn’t listen to me.

No matter, it’s finally in my hands!

So the Steam Deck is twice the size of my Switch Lite but it won’t be replacing the latter. I set it up and that didn’t take long. There might still be some tweaking I need to do but it isn’t urgent. I’m impressed with how sturdy it is.

I will try to get a screen protector for it just in case, as I always do for any new devices. Since I ordered the 512GB model it also came with some extra goodies like an exclusive case, keyboard themes, and an anti-glare screen.

So what have I played on it so far? I started Journey which runs great and am continuing my Cat Quest II run on it. I am not sure if I will try any AAA games on it immediately since I tend to get paranoid about battery life. Some games that are not verified, but playable, will need some some tweaking. But it would be hard to not want to play those types of games on my desktop instead depending on the game!

Library layout looks nice. I can do everything here like browse the store, look at my profile, add funds, etc. Since this is a new device, Valve is still updating it so that it runs more efficiently. I can only hope that more games in my library can be played on it. Some are marked as unsupported but it states Valve is still working on making it possible to play them on this device.

What I do hope they fix is issues with cloud sync because sometimes when I install a game I already started on my desktop, there is an error with the deck syncing with Steam Cloud and I don’t want to lose my progress.

Other than that, it’s safe to say that I already love my Steam Deck and it’s worth the money, I can’t wait to play more games on it, I might bounce a little between playing something on them or on my desktop. Let’s just say I want to do some gaming but I’m not in the mood to sit in my chair so hey, I can take my deck and lie on the bed with it, just like with my Switch!

Nice job Valve, you really knocked it out of the park with this!

  1. Congrats on getting yours!

I *know* I’d not really use a SteamDeck very much, as any time I’m home, I prefer desktop. And when I’m out… It’s out for a reason that doesn’t involve much idle time without interaction with others. Had this issue with my Switch, too.

…But I still kinda want one. Hah. 🙂

    1. Well it’s up to you, if you don’t think you’re going to use it much then maybe just get the 65GB model. I love using my desktop at home but sometimes it’s nice to lie on the bed too.

  2. I prefer both.. I can play minecraft on my steam deck and also play movies and Netflix on it also. You can watch YouTube on thr steam deck. I even make it a second desktop when I am home. So it just depends on what you want to do with it. Don’t forget to check out my blog : Paulstechtalk.com
